Dashboard - Keep an Eye on the Indicators - June 9, 2010
The two gauges look out a quarter on the manufacturing technology order outlook and the outlook for our industry’s customers’ market — the durables manufacturing market. As the block graphics show, the impacts of the indicators on the two different markets are not necessarily the same.
The top two indicators are the Purchasing Managers’ (PMI) and capacity utilization (CU) indices. A PMI greater than 50 suggests an expanding economy and orders for manufacturing technology products are usually on a year-on-year growth rate — even if the growth is from a larger negative rate to a smaller negative rate. In this case the indicator has the same impact on both markets and it is GREEN! The PMI bottomed out in December 2008 and has been above the magic 50 index for the past 9 months. It has grown faster in the last 4 months than in the first 4 months after it broke 50.
